NUEVA HELVECIA - COLONIA - URUGUAY

Characterized by the enterprising spirit of its inhabitants, this town was founded by immigrants from several European nations in 1862, when most of them arrived.

First touristic area of the country, with the inauguration of the Suizo Hotel in 1872, and the first agricultural center as well, being leaders in technological advancement.

Many industries congregate there today, mainly the dairy ones.

Their tourist attractions include the Founders’ Square, the Regional Archive Museum, the José Pedro Varela Municipal Park, the Burnt Mill, the Teófilo Karlen cheese factory, the Schöenstalt Sanctuary, the Helvetic Movie House, the Retiro Park, and the AFE train station.

Besides, the visitor can go into one of the artisanal cheese dairy and learn about the process of making cheese, a product that is extremely connected to the history and culture of the area.
