Real de San Carlos

It is an old Spanish military enclave, so named in honor of King Carlos III, a short distance from downtown Colonia del Sacramento.

In this section of the city also stands the St. Benito Church, with its image of the black saint; the Nicolás Mihanovich complex. Mr. Mihanovich was a European entrepreneur and visionary, who developed this touristic complex at the beginning of the XX century. According to the fashion of the times, he included a dock, a casino, a hotel, and a fronton that welcomed vacationers from nearby Buenos Aires.
